Staying a night should be more than just a place to stay. That’s why we at Héraðsskólinn Historic Guesthouse believe in more than just a room. With us you can walk in the footsteps of Icelandic history while enjoying all the amenities of a hotel, an on-site restaurant and so much more.

We are located in the heart of the Golden Circle, only an hour away from Reykjavik. Built in 1928 by one of the most loved politicians in Iceland with a great help from the most amazing architect to be  a center of culture and education, Héraðsskólinn was the place were Halldór Laxness our Nobel prize winning writer wrote his most famous book Independent People in Room 12 on the 3rd floor of the building.

The school was redecorated in 2013 with mostly original furniture and pieces to restore its amazing history and culture for our guests.

We are very proud to present this historic and beautiful hotel to you.

Héraðsskólinn is located in Laugarvatn, right next to the outstanding natural steam baths of Fontana, beautiful hiking trails and beautiful landscapes in every direction. Laugarvatn is also in the center of the Golden Circle so whether you want to visit Thingvellir, Gullfoss or Geysir, Héraðsskólinn is the perfect getaway to spend the night.

Cozy, comfortable, and affordably elegant, our guesthouse houses a unique clientele. Young backpackers stay in our made up dorms, parents and children in family rooms, and couples in private accommodation. We like to think our lodging serves as a meeting place for people from all walks of life.

Our restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and serves a tasty menu of local fare. Travelers passing through the area will often stop by for a hearty meal.

You can also book trips, guides, and other activities, by speaking with our concierge at the front desk.
